Su hija, Mary Anne South (1817 \u2013 1910), escribi\u00f3 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A suggestive inquiry into the hermetic mystery<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, obra considerada un monumento de la literatura alqu\u00edmica de todos los tiempos. Pero ambos decidieron destruir la edici\u00f3n de la misma, porque juzgaron que se revelaban, de una manera demasiado expl\u00edcita, secretos que hasta entonces hab\u00edan permanecido ocultos. El <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ex libris<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> presenta el s\u00edmbolo de la alquimia, el ur\u00f3boros (en griego, serpiente que se muerde la cosa). La serpiente devor\u00e1ndose a s\u00ed misma simboliza la naturaleza c\u00edclica de las cosas (vida, muerte y resurrecci\u00f3n), y la perfecci\u00f3n (el c\u00edrculo). Dentro del ur\u00f3boros se encuentra la estrella de ocho puntas, s\u00edmbolo m\u00e1s antiguo de la Gran Diosa utilizada por diferentes culturas. En la cimera, la corona (realeza qu\u00edmica, perfecci\u00f3n \u00faltima de los metales) de la que sale un drag\u00f3n. Para Cirlot, el sentido simb\u00f3lico m\u00e1s profundo del drag\u00f3n es el de enemigo primordial. Sobre toda la composici\u00f3n se encuentra una divisa con la frase latina <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hic labor hoc opus est<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (\u00e9ste es el trabajo, \u00e9ste el sufrimiento) tomada de la <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eneida<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> de Virgilio (Canto VI, 1229).
